When should my mattress be replaced?

How long a mattress lasts depends on the quality of the materials that are within. Variance in the density of cushioning will cause some mattresses to breakdown faster or last longer.

People tend to replace innerspring mattresses every 5 to 8 years. Quality innerspring mattresses rarely have broken springs, but springs do lose their resilience over time and you should be paying attention to your mattress when it is over 5 years old.

After you have had a full night's sleep and you don't feel rested, it may be time to rest-test a new mattress.

Also, as mattresses age, things grow inside them like mold, mildew and dust mites. A mattress cover can help to protect against these things, as well as stains. A Sleep Specialist can recommend a mattress cover that will offer you a 10 year guarantee again stains.

What is a mattress topper?

A topper is an attempt to improve the comfort of an old mattress and is not needed when you have a good quality mattress. On the other hand, a mattress cover is a good idea that will keep your mattress fresh and new.

If I replace my mattress, do I also need to replace my box spring?

Mattresses and foundations are designed to complement one another. Most adult innerspring mattress sets have foundations that flex. This movement in the foundation causes the mattress to last longer and feel differently.

Up to 70% of the wear of a mattress set is in the moving foundation. This means that only 30% of the wear is in the mattress. If one's old box spring is causing the existing mattress to sag, then replacing only the mattress can cause the new mattress to sag within a short time.

A matched set will give you better and longer lasting comfort and support.

In addition, certain specialty mattresses require a solid foundation. Ask your Sleep Specialist.

How can I tell if I need a new mattress?

When you are not feeling rested after a full night's sleep. When you have a backache in the morning. When you toss and turn and just can't get comfortable. Or, you may be experiencing health or medical problems that are robbing you of your sleep. Although a mattress can't solve all medical problems, it can often help.

How is a memory foam mattress different from a latex mattress?

Both are without coils and do a good job of relieving stress. Latex Foam is more resilient and responds faster. Memory Foam conforms to you and is sensitive to the temperature of your body. Some say advanced Tempur foam is without equal.

When choosing, most people will like the feel of one or the other better. Trust your comfort sense. You can compare them side-by-side in our Sleep Centers and make the right choice.

What are the different sizes of mattresses?

Twin is 39" x 75" and is available extra long at 80"
Full is 54" by 75" and can be had 80" long
Queen size is 60" x 80"
King size is 78" x 80" or California King is 72"x 84"
Adjustable beds come in standard widths that are usually extra long because when they adjust, they get shorter.

What are the differences in mattresses?

Today the differences are many. Basically a better mattress is higher quality and will last longer providing a higher level of comfort and support. A better mattress is usually a better investment over the long run.
